Maine Census Notes

Between 1650 & 1819 Maine was under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts. Maine achieved statehood in 1820.  This is an important fact when searching for Maine ancestors in census records.

An 1837 Special Census for Maine has been located and most of it is online.  This online version is missing a few of the larger cities. See 1837 Special Maine Census.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal Maine census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900 and 1920.

Maine Federal Census records are available to the public for census years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850. 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. Remember in 1790, 1800 and 1810, Maine was included in the Massachusetts Federal census. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal Census schedules for Maine were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of the Widows and Veterans schedules.  These schedules are a helpful census substitute for the 1890 time period. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap and 1800-1890 Maine Census Records at Ancestry.
