Federal Mississippi census records are available to the public for the following census years: 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
1890 MS Census Schedules were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of the 1890 Mississippi Veterans and Widows Schedules which are included in the 1805-1890 Mississippi Census at Ancestry. Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal Mississippi census records are available on microfilm for the following census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.
Mississippi school census records were taken frequently and may be helpful in tracking your ancestors. You can learn more about these special Mississippi enumerations of educable school children 1850-1892 and 1908-1957 at Family Search and browse the images of these records online as well.
Mississippi state census records were enumerated for several years. Genealogically speaking, these will hold the name of the head of household and number statistics for other members in the household. They can prove helpful for filling in gaps. Known MS state census years are 1801, 1805, 1808, 1810, 1816, 1818, 1820, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1825, 1830, 1833, 1837, 1840, 1841, 1845, 1850, 1853, 1860, and 1866. All of these are incomplete sets of data. Some of these are online at the Mississippi USGenWeb Census Project & are included in the 1792-1866 Mississippi State & Territorial Census Collection at Ancestry. All Mississippi state census records can be viewed on microfilm or published in book form at the Mississippi Department of Archives & History.
