Montana Census NotesThe first Federal census enumerated for Montana was in 1870 and a census was taken every ten years thereafter: 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. 1890 Federal Census Schedules were completely destroyed by fire in 1921, however, the Veterans and Widows Census did survive and is often used for searching in that census year. Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Montana Federal census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, and 1920. There are not very many census records online for Montana. This is partly due to the fact that statehood was not until 1889. Also, many counties were not formed until the late 1900s. It is particularly important to look to the county formation dates so you will know which counties to search in for records in earlier time periods. State Census Records: Some states took their own censuses. Unfortunately, there are not any Montana state census records known to exist.
