New Hampshire Census Notes

In 1776, New Hampshire required all males over the age of 21 to sign the Association Test.  This patriotic signing of the loyalty oath created a unique type of census which may enable researchers to locate ancestors in early NH records. See 1776 Inhabitants of New Hampshire at Ancestry.

Federal New Hampshire census records begin in 1790 and were enumerated every 10 years thereafter. Complete Federal NH census records are available on microfilm for the following years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal New Hampshire Census Records were destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 New Hampshire Veterans and Widows schedules did survive the fire and can be used as a census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for New Hampshire Federal census records are available for the census years 1880, 1900, and 1920.  The 1930 Federal census for NH was NOT soundexed by the Federal government, however Ancestry.com provides an every name index to the 1930 Census.

New Hampshire State Census Records: Many U.S. states took their own censuses, however, there are not any New Hampshire state census records known to exist.

 New Hampshire

(Statehood 1788.)

One of the original thirteen colonies.  The first settlements were in Dover, Portsmouth and Rye in the 1620's.  For almost a hundred years, fear of Indian attack delayed further settlement.  New Hampshire was part of the Massachusetts colony in 1641.  In 1679 it was under British rule.  After the Revolutionary War, new settlements began springing up and statehood was achieved in 1788.
