North Dakota Census Notes
1860, 1870, 1880 and 1885 Dakota Territory Census Records are known to exist. Dakota Territory was created in 1861 and encompassed all of both North Dakota and South Dakota until 1887 when they were split. This information can come into play when searching for ancestors in the Dakotas. There are several Dakota Territory censuses available online. See the links to the right under Statewide North Dakota Census Records Online.

Federal North Dakota Census Records are available to the public for the following census years: 1860 Dakota Territory, 1870 Dakota Territory, 1880 Dakota Territory, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 North Dakota Federal Census schedules were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules for North Dakota did survive the fire and may provide a helpful census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.
