Ohio Census Notes:

In 1790, Ohio was considered hostile territory.  Due to this fact, there was not a 1790 Federal Census taken in what was known as Northwest Territory.

1800 & 1810 Ohio Federal Census Records were completely lost with the exception of Washington County.

1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 Ohio Federal Census Records are intact and available to the public.

1890 Ohio Federal Census Records were destroyed by fire in the Commerce Department Building in January 1921. Small fragments of Hamilton and Clinton Counties survived the fire along with the 1890 Union Veterans and Widows Schedules which are often used as a census substitute.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal Ohio census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920.
