Utah Census Notes

1850-1930 Federal Utah Census Records are available to the public. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal Utah census records were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the Utah schedules for Veterans and Widows census did survive and is often helpful for locating ancestors in that census year. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Utah State Census Records include the following census years: 1852, 1856, 1872, & 1896. The 1856 Utah state census along with an 1859 tax list are included in 1850-1890 Utah Census Records Collection at Ancestry.

 Utah

(Territory 1850.  Statehood 1896.)

Early settlers were mostly members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).  Settlement began in July 1847 with the first arrival of approximately 150 men, 3 women and 2 boys.  By 1850, the population of Mormons who had traveled over the vast plains, to reach this desolate place had reached about 11,000.  The Genealogy Society of Utah is the most active group in the world, collecting millions of records and depositing them in their archives for use by all genealogy researchers.
