Washington Census Notes
Between 1848 and 1853, Washington Territory was included in Oregon Territory. See Oregon Census Records.
In 1848, Washington Territory was carved from Oregon Territory and it included present day Idaho. Territorial censuses were taken at various times between 1857 and 1892. See Washington State and Territorial Censuses, 1857-1892 at Ancestry.
Federal Washington census records are available to the public for census years 1860 (Washington Territory), 1870 (Washington Territory), 1880 (Washington Territory), 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
Indians were enumerated in special schedules in 1880 &1900 Federal Washington Census records. There are also various Indian census records recorded 1887-1914. These census records include the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs census rolls for Indian tribes within Washington Territory 1885-1889 and Washington State 1889-1913. Tribes include the Chehalis, Clallam, Columbia, Moses Band of Columbia, Colville, Georgetown, Humptulips, Hoh, Hoquiam, Lake, Makah, Montesano, Mukleshoot, Nisqually, Nespelim, Joseph's BAnd of Nex Perce, Okanogan, Oyehut, Puyallup, Queets, Quileute, Quinault, San Poil, Satsop, Skallam, Skokomish, Spokane, Squaxin, and Couer d;Alene. 1890 Special Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive and may be used as a census substitute. See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Birth & death records from July 1, 1907 to present are held at the Center for Health Statistics at the above address.
Birth records from January 1, 1921 to present can be ordered through local health jurisdictions.
Earlier birth & death records, all marriage records, divorce records and all land records are on file in each individual county and are held by the County Auditors with the exception of King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane Counties, where they are held by the local health jurisdiction. Early vital records are also on file at the Washington State Archives.
