Washington Census Notes

Between 1848 and 1853, Washington Territory was included in Oregon Territory.  See Oregon Census Records.

In 1848, Washington Territory was carved from Oregon Territory and it included present day Idaho.  Territorial censuses were taken at various times between 1857 and 1892.  See Washington State and Territorial Censuses, 1857-1892 at Ancestry.

Federal Washington census records are available to the public for census years 1860 (Washington Territory), 1870 (Washington Territory), 1880 (Washington Territory), 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

Indians were enumerated in special schedules in 1880 &1900 Federal Washington Census records.  There are also various Indian census records recorded 1887-1914.  These census records include the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs census rolls for Indian tribes within Washington Territory 1885-1889 and Washington State 1889-1913.  Tribes include the Chehalis, Clallam, Columbia, Moses Band of Columbia, Colville, Georgetown, Humptulips, Hoh, Hoquiam, Lake, Makah, Montesano, Mukleshoot, Nisqually, Nespelim, Joseph's BAnd of Nex Perce, Okanogan, Oyehut, Puyallup, Queets, Quileute, Quinault, San Poil, Satsop, Skallam, Skokomish, Spokane, Squaxin, and Couer d;Alene.  These records are not all inclusive for all years.  Some of these Indian Census Rolls are indexed online.  See Indian Census Records at the Washington Digital Archives.

1890 Federal Washington Census Records were destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap.

1890 Special Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive and may be used as a census substitute. See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Washington State Census Records: There are many various early state and territorial census records for Washington.  Many of these are included in the 1857-1892 Washington State and Territorial Census Records at Ancestry.
